APC Super Sunday Food Bracket: The Semi-Finals are here!

Will the favorites prevail again?

We’re on to day 2! Much like the NCAA Tournament heading into the 2nd round, this is where things get interesting. Four top dogs all won in a landslide yesterday. I honestly feel naïve for thinking the underdogs had a shot! But today is where the tough decisions are made.

We’ll all need to vote with our conscience. Long, hard looks in the mirror will be paired with tracking shots of us walking in the rain, pondering life’s biggest questions: Wings or Nachos? Pizza or Chips & Dip? The bracket has been reseeded so that the top seed, wings, get the lowest seed, nachos. The continued dominance of wings gives them this privilege. They’ve handled adversity better than any other contender and are now reaping the reward.

To recap the quarterfinals, Wings defeated Tacos with 68% of the vote in a crushing defeat. Tacos were a long shot but they can rest easy knowing they’re probably the cheapest option in this bracket. Pizza defeated Cookies with 91% of the vote! Not much needs to be said about this blowout. Let’s move on. In the 3 vs. 6 matchup, Chips & Dip defeated Burgers with 64% of the vote. I have to think that the versatility of chips & dip carried it here. They can beat you in a variety of ways, whether it’s with high-level concepts or simple seasonings. Finally, Nachos crushed Meatballs with 71% of the vote. This one was expected. But I do want to speak to the people who voted meatballs. As someone who would vote for Nachos over any other food, the meatball gang fascinates me.

With that summary out of the way, it is time to move on to the voting for the Semi-Finals!

1. Wings vs. 4. Nachos

As mentioned yesterday, wings are the top dog. They are the most purchased and most consumed food on Super Bowl Sunday. I don’t see a Cinderella moment happening for nachos. As much as I love nachos, even I will admit their clear downside in this matchup. Wings are either drenched or dipped in sauce at our leisure. Nachos, however, suffer from the dreaded topping distribution. When you get a fully loaded nacho, it’s unlike anything in the world! Few achievements in life allow you to reach such a height. But there is a dark, sinister underbelly to the world of nachos; and that’s the naked chip. No one wants to see a pile of delicious toppings and then be the person who gets the bland, half salted tortilla chip. It could possibly ruin the whole night! There is a real risk/reward ratio you need to calculate for this matchup.

2. Pizza vs. 3. Chips & Dip

Our second Semi-Final matchup is all about flexibility. These two competitors can turn into anything. They’re the Autobots of food! Want a thin, classic pepperoni slice? No problem. Want to lather the slice in burger sauce and ground beef to make a “Cheeseburger Pizza?” Um… go ahead I guess. Some people are into that. As long as you can avoid the wrath of New Yorkers screaming at you for eating your pizza wrong, you are in the clear for a delicious meal. However, chips & dip has its perks too. Maybe you already ate your big game day meal. Maybe you just need to throw something together in a flash. That’s where chips & dip come in. Whether you eat it hot or cold, sweet or spicy, smooth or lumpy; it’s there for you. Before you know it, you’ve eaten an entire family-sized container of queso by the 3rd quarter and you’re contemplating what led you to this point. In other words, it’s a strong contender!
