With a cigar in hand, former Green Bay Packers linebacker AJ Hawk joined The Pat McAfee Show to talk about his week with Aaron Rodgers and how he thinks Rodgers’ offseason eventually concludes. A former teammate who spent time with the quarterback is a good temperature test for the perspectives that national reporters have given, so let’s dive right in.
On Rodgers’ mentality during their week of golf, boating and playing catch, Hawk said, “He wanted to win. You can see when somebody wants to win. I think he was very happy he won. He likes to compete. Is that a guy who’s going to sit out and retire to you?” In some ways, this answers the question of if Rodgers actually would want to retire, given his options.
When pressed on if Rodgers will play for Green Bay this season, Hawk stated, “I don’t know. What have I said from the start? I said I don’t see him playing anywhere else, right?” He also added, “I don’t see Green Bay trading him. I don’t see that happening. I don’t know how it has to work, but, yeah, I still feel like he’s going to be in Green Bay.”
If Rodgers is going to retire, he’s doing a pretty bad job of showing he’s willing to retire at this point in time. Reading the tea leaves, between national reports and reports from people who have active firsthand conversations with him, it seems like we’re likely heading for a situation where Rodgers shows up for training camp in less than two weeks.
