Matt LaFleur’s first game as head coach of the Green Bay Packers was about two years ago — a preseason contest against the Houston Texans at Lambeau Field. This weekend, that little unremarkable piece of history repeats itself as the Texans come to Wisconsin again for the opening game of the teams’ 2021 preseasons.
Last time, these teams also held joint practices during the lead-up to the game. This year, that will not be the case, with the Packers instead practicing jointly with the New York Jets for next weekend’s game.
The 2019 team had a bit of quarterback intrigue in the summer, as DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle battled for the backup job behind Aaron Rodgers. Boyle would win the job that summer, but he left in free agency this offseason. Instead, there is no question about the hierarchy this season, with Jordan Love backing up Rodgers and Kurt Benkert seemingly in line for the #3 job, but Love should be a major part of the story.
This will be Love’s first game action in a Packers uniform, as last year’s preseason was canceled and he served as the #3 throughout the regular season. That alone should give Packers fans something worth watching, and Love is expected to start the game and play into the second half before giving way to Benkert.
Saturday’s game will not be broadcast nationally, but fans outside the Packers’ local TV market will have an opportunity to tune in live via the NFL’s streaming service, Gamepass. Check out full details on broadcast and streaming options in our Game Primer below.
