The Green Bay Packers’ first game of the 2021 season was one to forget. After the team received a 38-3 stomping at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, the Packers look to shake off their week 1 loss and get back to their identity this evening against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football.
The Lions enter this game 0-1 as well, dropping a decision to the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday. Detroit found themselves down by 28 points early in the second half, but managed to fight back to within eight points, ultimately losing 41-33 after their final drive stalled out on fourth down with seconds remaining.
Both teams will look to establish the running game early. That was part of the Packers’ downfall in week one, as the offense got off to a bit of a slow start while the defense allowed New Orleans to eat up almost the entire clock in the first half en route to a 17-0 lead. Detroit, meanwhile, gave up 17 points to San Francisco in the last 2:30 of the second half, with the Lions throwing a pick-six and going three-and-out between 49ers scores in that sequence.
The Packers and Lions also enter tonight’s game with notable injury issues. Za’Darius Smith landed himself on injured reserve this week for Green Bay, which places additional pressure on Preston Smith and Rashan Gary to step up. Meanwhile, Detroit will be without starting wide receiver Tyrell Williams, who will miss his second straight game with a concussion.
