Cheese Curds, 9/8: Packers open in Jacksonville for second time in 5 years

With Sunday’s game being moved out of the Superdome, Green Bay heads to the Atlantic coast of Florida once again, this time to play against a team that similarly values undrafted players.

In 2016, the Green Bay Packers opened their season in Jacksonville, beating the Jaguars 27-23. In 2011, the Packers began the year at home against the New Orleans Saints, recording a 42-34 victory.

This year, they will reprise both of those season openers in different ways as they head to TIAA Bank Field to play the Saints, with the game being moved out of New Orleans due to Hurricane Ida. This is something the Saints have gone through before, however, as they played outside of New Orleans for the entire 2005 season, when Hurricane Katrina hit the area.

When the Packers do play that game on Sunday, they’ll have plenty of young players lining up in big spots. But draft status isn’t always a sure-fire sign of earning playing time in Green Bay — or in New Orleans, for that matter. Both teams are among the NFL’s leaders in having the most undrafted players on the roster, and both will see players who didn’t have their names called lining up in the starting lineup on Sunday.

Keep it here at APC throughout the rest of the week as we get you ready for Sunday!
