Last week, Hurricane Ida hit the coast along the Gulf of Mexico, bringing another severe, damaging storm to the area around New Orleans. While area works to restore power — thankfully a majority of the city has the lights back on as of Thursday — the damage will again take significant time to sort through and to recover from.
As was the case with Hurricane Katrina 16 years ago, Ida’s wake leaves the New Orleans Saints looking for a place to play, as the New Orleans Superdome has been deemed unusable for the start of the 2021 football season. As a result, their opening week game against the Green Bay Packers will take place elsewhere, with the game set to be played in Jacksonville, Florida instead.
The Packers head into Sunday with questions about one of their star defensive players. Za'darius Smith was questionable on this week's injury report after being in and out of practice, and his lingering back issue could well keep him out of this game. If so, the Packers will lean heavily on Preston Smith and Rashan Gary to carry the load of trying to pressure Saints quarterback Jameis Winston.
Thankfully for Packers fans across the United States, this game is the premier late-afternoon contest on FOX, with just one other game taking place at the same time. That means that almost all of the country — with the exception of the home markets for the Denver Broncos and New York Giants — will be able to see the Packers and Saints on local television.
