Playoffs?!?! We’re talking about playoffs?!?!
That’s right, this week’s poll questions revolve around the postseason, which the Packers are “in the hunt” for after a Thanksgiving win against the Detroit Lions. According to The New York Times’ playoff simulator, Green Bay now has a 50 percent chance to finish as a top-seven seed in the NFC — in part due to the Minnesota Vikings’ loss against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football and the Seattle Seahawks’ continued collapse.
If the Packers can win four of their last six games, it’s near a lock that they’ll make it to the postseason. Even if Green Bay splits their games, they still have a chance. The Packers also have the easiest remaining strength of schedule in the NFL outside of the NFC South.
So let’s get into the questions.
Question 1: Do you think the team will make the playoffs this season?
This one is simple: Yes or no, do the Packers make it to the playoffs as you see it today? Personally, I lean yes. The Vikings have a backup quarterback starting under center who just threw four interceptions against a below-average Bears team that won without ever scoring a touchdown. The Josh Dobbs magic was never long for this world.
The Seahawks have also lost three of their last four games and are going to face the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles in the upcoming three weeks. It’s hard to imagine that the Packers won’t outpace these teams in the final month and a half of the season, unless their offensive passing game loses the consistency that it’s found over November.
Question 2: Which team would you want to face in the playoffs?
This is the fun one. I don’t think the Packers are going on a Super Bowl run. You don’t think the Packers are going on a Super Bowl run. The Packers don’t think they’re going on a Super Bowl run.
BUT there is an opportunity to ruin someone’s season on the horizon. Assuming that the NFC South winner comes away with the fourth seed, Green Bay’s most likely pulls in the wildcard round would be a road game against either the San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys or the Detroit Lions.
After all the playoff pain that the 49ers have caused us over the years, I would chuckle if we were able to knock them out of the postseason on the opening weekend of the playoffs. That’s my vote. My runner-up would probably be beating the Lions, who have had the Packers’ number lately and knocked Green Bay out of playoff contention in Week 18 last season.
