Cheese Curds, 11/30: How will Jordan Love fare this time against the aggressive Chiefs?

Love struggled mightily in his first start against Kansas City and their blitz-heavy defense. The Packers need him to be more like the QB he has been in recent weeks if they want to get a win this weekend.

Jordan Love’s first NFL start came just over two years ago, when he filled in for Aaron Rodgers against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Love got the start because Rodgers had tested positive for COVID-19 and was unavailable, but the young QB’s debut was a rough one.

The Chiefs pressured him constantly and the Packers scored just seven points, coming up with a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was a shame, too, because Green Bay’s defense put in a fantastic performance, holding Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense to just 13 points.

This time, however, Love is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the NFL, having shown steady improvement over the last several weeks and posting his best game as a pro — and the best game by any quarterback in week 12, according to DYAR — last week against the Detroit Lions.

But while that is the case for Love, the Chiefs pose a very different challenge than they even did two years ago. Kansas City’s defense currently ranks in the top 5 in most major categories, including points allowed (3rd) and yards allowed (4th). It’s a defense that is suddenly among the elite units in the NFL, and it provides a complement to an offense powered by Patrick Mahomes that has often gone silent after halftime this season.

Love will need to find a way to far surpass his performance from his debut on Sunday night if the Packers are to win, and he’ll need to do so while facing a lot of extra pass-rushers. He should have open receivers when the Chiefs bring the blitz, but the challenge will be to find them and get the ball to them quickly. If he’s successful, there’s an opportunity for him to have another defining game this weekend.

Love's first start came two years ago against the Chiefs, who blitzed him nonstop and held him to just 190 yards through the air. He should be much better-equipped those looks this time, as he's coming off his best game as a pro and also gets a long week to prepare.

Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo will always be aggressive, however, and he's not going to go easy on Love because he has been hot lately. Love getting the ball out quickly will surely be a big part of the Packers' offensive game plan.
