In this week’s episode, Pack-A-Day Podcast’s Andy Herman and Acme Packing Company’s Justis Mosqueda touch on all things Green Bay Packers, including the elephant in the room: defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Obviously, there’s going to be a lot of talk about the defensive side of the ball, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for a perfect passer rating on Sunday, but our duo does come around to talk about the offensive side of the ball at the end of the podcast.
Head coach Matt LaFleur didn’t end up firing Barry this week, but his choice of words was different than in the past. Does this mean that Barry’s firing is inevitable or does Barry still have a chance to coach his way into being the defensive coordinator in 2024?
If Barry is let go, what type of list of candidates are we looking at in Green Bay? Aside from the obvious NFL names in Ejiro Evero and Brandon Staley, Mosqueda rattles off three names who might be willing to make the jump from the college level to the NFL. As sick as it may seem, a lot of coaches are looking to the NFL for better work-life balance when compared to college ball right now.
Filling out a defensive coordinator position in Green Bay, Wisconsin if LaFleur is coming off of back-to-back losing seasons may be a bit tougher than most fans realize. The Packers very well might end up making a hire that works for them, but don’t assume that the name they end up landing on will “win the press conference.”
