The Green Bay Packers are getting back one of their best defensive players for today’s Christmas Eve matchup with the Carolina Panthers. Cornerback Jaire Alexander has returned to the active gameday roster for today’s game after missing each of the past six games.
Alexander’s return comes on the heels of Eric Stokes’ activation from injured reserve last week, giving the team the potential to have a very different cornerback unit from the group that took the field two weeks ago. Rookie Carrington Valentine has established himself as a starter-caliber player on the boundary in the meantime and Keisean Nixon remains a top option in the slot, so the way that the Packers roll out the corners in today’s game will be fascinating to watch.
In addition to Alexander’s return, the Packers will also have running back AJ Dillon active for today’s game after a one-game absence with a broken thumb. Dillon’s deactivation last week was the first injury-related unavailability of his career, and he will pair with Aaron Jones for the first time in months today.
In less-positive news, rookie wide receiver Jayden Reed is inactive for today’s game after failing to participate in practice all week. Reed is listed with toe and chest injuries on the injury report, but he will join Christian Watson on the inactive list. That means that the Packers will roll with a top unit of Romeo Doubs and Dontyavion Wicks, with Malik Heath, Samori Toure, and Bo Melton as other wide receiver options.
Among the other inactives are starting linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and safety Darnell Savage, who were ruled out on Friday’s injury report. They join healthy scratches Robert Rochell, Brenton Cox, and Caleb Jones on the bench for today’s game.
