This afternoon, the Green Bay Packers are in Charlotte to face the Carolina Panthers with the visiting team’s slim playoff hopes very much on the line. After back-to-back losses, the Packers’ postseason chances are very much on life support, dropping from well over 50% two weeks ago to just 22% today (according to the New York Times’ model).
Each remaining game is massive for Green Bay if they want to make the postseason, as their current 6-8 record puts them within a game of clinching a losing record for the 2023 season. The swing in playoff odds in today’s game ranges from a 30% chance with a Packers win down to just 6% if they lose.
Carolina, meanwhile, does not even have a top draft pick to try for this week, as their first-round draft pick in 2024 will belong to the Chicago Bears due to a draft-day trade last April. A Panthers win today would hurt Packers’ playoff chances significantly, of course, but it would also lessen the chance of their pick being #1 overall before it heads to Chicago.
