Packers Inactives: CB Jaire Alexander OUT vs. Kansas City Chiefs

The Green Bay Packers will be without cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder), who hasn’t played since Week 9 against the Los Angeles Rams, versus the Kansas City Chiefs. Alexander, the team’s preferred starter, went down almost immediately after Rasul Douglas was traded to the Buffalo Bills — leaving rookie seventh-round pick Carrington Valentine and former practice squadder Corey Ballentine as the team’s outside cornerbacks.

Along with Alexander, running back Aaron Jones (knee) and tight end Josiah Deguara (hip) will also miss the action tonight. Jones’ status was announced earlier in the week, as he hasn’t even practiced since going down against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11.

As a response to the injuries, fullback Henry Pearson and running back James Robinson were called up off of the practice squad this week — presumably to replace Deguara and Jones, respectively. Against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, these same two call-ups were made, but only Pearson saw any snaps in the game — suggesting that Robinson is something close to an emergency player off of the bench.

The good news is that the Packers are going to have five players available to them who were previously called questionable by the team on Friday’s final injury report: receiver Jayden Reed (chest), receiver Dontayvion Wicks (knee), inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, safety Rudy Ford (biceps/groin) and cornerback Robert Rochell (calf). Campbell has been out of the lineup since Week 11 and has missed four games total this season. Ford was last seen in Week 10. Both of those players are preferred starters and should return to their starting positions in the lineup.

The spine of the Packers’ defense, between the returns of Campbell, Ford and safety Darnell Savage, should see a big boost this week. Savage was officially taken off of the injured reserve earlier in the week and is going to be on the gameday roster today. For much of the season, Green Bay has been forced to start backups at either inside linebacker and/or safety, which they won’t have to today.
