The calendar for 2023 and 2024 dictates that there can be no Monday Night Football game in the NFL’s week 17 schedule. New Year’s Day falls on Monday, which means that college football gets to claim that day for itself, leaving the NFL to reschedule a normal Monday night game to this evening instead — Saturday night.
This should be a good one, however, as two teams that have clinched playoff spots in the NFC battle for positioning in the conference. The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys both still have a shot at the conference’s number one seed, and although Dallas has a tougher road — being one game back of Detroit and needing help just to win the division — they are not yet mathematically eliminated.
If Detroit wins tonight, they will guarantee no worse than a tie on record for the top spot in the NFC, though they lag behind the San Francisco 49ers in terms of the conference record tiebreaker. Therefore, Detroit needs to win its final two games and see the 49ers drop one against either the Commanders or Rams to keep hopes of a playoff bye alive.
Dallas may not have a viable shot at the top seed, but they do still have a chance to win the NFC East, sitting a game back of the Eagles. The Cowboys will have the tiebreaker over Philly if the two teams end up with the same record at the end of the season, so they also are playing for something tonight and into week 18.
