NFL Wild Card Sunday: Matthew Stafford returns to Detroit in prime time

Here is your full Sunday games thread for the Wild Card tripleheader.

For the first 12 years of his NFL career, Matthew Stafford toiled away in Michigan, wearing Honolulu Blue. The Detroit Lions made the playoffs just three times in Stafford’s career there, losing each of their three games on the road. Indeed, Stafford never played a postseason game at his team’s home stadium until 2021, his first year with the Los Angeles Rams.

Tonight, Stafford will play a playoff game at Ford Field as a member of those Rams, trying to extend the Lions’ postseason losing streak to nine games, a stretch that dates back to 1991. In his way is a tough Lions squad that won the NFC North with Jared Goff under center — a player who came back to Detroit in exchange for Stafford.

That’s just one of many storylines in today’s three Wild Card games, but it is one that NFL fans will surely hear about throughout the day. Another big one is of course the Green Bay Packers facing their old head coach, Mike McCarthy. Green Bay won its way into the postseason in week 18 against the Chicago Bears and will play the Cowboys thanks in large part to their bizarre win over the Lions in week 17 amid a reporting as eligible fiasco. The Packers beat McCarthy at Lambeau Field last season in his first game against his old team; Green Bay will also look to maintain an incredible run of success at AT&T Stadium.

There was originally supposed to be an early AFC matchup between the Steelers and Bills, two franchises that dominated the conference in the early 1990s. But that game has been moved to Monday due to weather, so Packers-Cowboys will start off the day today. Join us for both games today and be sure to keep it here for kickoff of the Packers’ game this afternoon.
