If one were to ask scouts and media members to pick which wide receiver made himself the most money on Thursday night at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine, Chase Claypool would be the number one answer in most cases. The Notre Dame wide receiver faced questions about his size heading into on-field workouts, as his 6-foot-4, 238-pound frame made many NFL scouts wonder about his fit in the league.
But on the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium, Claypool made one of the earliest and loudest statements, running a blistering 4.42-second 40-yard dash. He followed that up with tremendous results in the explosion drills as well, demonstrating that no position change is necessary whatsoever.
Though he did not do agility testing, Claypool’s workout for now earns him the rare perfect 10 in Relative Athletic Score (RAS), meaning he is overall the most athletic receiver that the system has tracked, eclipsing even Calvin Johnson.
Chase Claypool is a WR prospect in the 2020 draft class out of Notre Dame.

He posted an elite #RAS with elite size, elite speed, elite explosiveness, at the WR position.https://t.co/TwFXYcKp72 pic.twitter.com/7NqXDsnQz5
Joining Claypool on the list of impressive workouts was Baylor’s Denzel Mims, who vaulted himself up into round-one discussion in Indy. A 4.38-second 40 did that job, making him a true size-speed combination at 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds. Mims then put up the best 3-cone time of anyone on Thursday at 6.66 seconds, going along with very good jumping metrics.
Another potential Packers target, Justin Jefferson from LSU assuaged any concerns about his speed as well to largely entrench himself in the first-round conversation. A 4.43 40 was a tremendous time for him, and he jumped well also.
Finally, Henry Ruggs III must earn a mention. He ran the fastest 40 of the day, as expected, running a 4.27. It is patently ridiculous that coming five hundredths of a second short of the fastest 40 time in history comes as a bit of a disappointment, however.
