2020 Combine DL Results: Top players skipped workouts, waiting for Pro Day instead

With Chase Young and Javon Kinlaw sitting out, the star power on the defensive line in Indy was down quite a bit.

While many of the defensive linemen were performing in drills at the 2020 NFL Combine, a few big names were sitting on the sidelines.

It appears to be a shallow group of defensive linemen in this year’s NFL Draft, and a few of the top players both on the edge and the interior decided to skip working out entirely. Chase Young, the likely second pick in the draft, did not work out, preferring instead to wait until his Pro Day. Javon Kinlaw from South Carolina, one of the top interior linemen, did the same. In all, there were a number of individuals who did not participate, either in specific drills or in the entirety of the workout.

Perhaps it was a good choice, as well. There were few truly standout performances among the linemen, although admittedly interior linemen’s numbers tend not to jump off the page.

Among the better workouts was Charlotte defensive end Alex Highsmith, an edge rusher who was among the NCAA leaders in sacks in 2019. Highsmith, whom we previewed during the Combine, had a solid overall workout with a 4.70-second 40, 33-inch vertical, and 10-foot-5 broad jump.

The fastest lineman time came from edge rusher James Smith-Williams out of NC State. He ran a great 4.60-second time at 265 pounds, Meanwhile, twin brothers Carlos and Khalil Davis out of Nebraska showed off their impressive genetics, running some of the best times among interior linemen. Both over 305 pounds, Khalil led the way with a 4.75-second time while Carlos was just a tick behind at 4.82 seconds.

However, to get a full assessment of this group, we will need to wait for Pro Day results to start rolling in over the next few weeks. Still, here are the numbers that are available from the testing that took place in Indianapolis.
