2020 Combine Workout Results: Antoine Winfield, Jr. leads impressive safety group

The diminutive Minnesota safety had a solid workout to allay some of the concerns about his height.

If you’re an NFL general manager looking for a great athlete at safety, then the 2020 NFL Draft class has some great options for you. Last weekend at the 2020 Combine, the safety group posted some excellent numbers in their 40-yard dashes and explosion drills, and although few players did agility drills, the numbers that did come in were very solid.

Among the 26 players in the group at the Combine, 20 ran the 40 with six running faster than 4.50 and 13 coming in with times of 4.60 or better. The fastest time of 4.37 came from Lousiana Tech’s L’Jarius Sneed, a former cornerback who intercepted three passes in each of his two years as a starter.

One of the higher-profile players at the position this year is Minnesota’s Antoine Winfield, Jr., the son of the former NFL cornerback of the same name. Winfield measured in on the short side, just a shade over 5-foot-9, which could scare away some teams. However, his 4.45-second 40 should help his cause, and he posted a solid vertical of 36 inches.

There are a number of bigger safeties in this year’s group as well, including Kyle Dugger from Lenoir-Rhyne (6-foot-1, 217) and Tanner Muse of Clemson (6-foot-2, 227). Both of those players ran in the 4.4 range — 4.49 and 4.41, respectively — while Dugger led the group with a 42-inch vertical. With the Packers in the market for help at linebacker, one option may be to draft a player like Muse on the third day of the draft and line him up off the ball. Muse said at the Combine that most teams were looking at him as a linebacker instead of a safety anyway, so this could be one option if the Packers do not invest an early pick at the position.

Take a look through all of the safety workout numbers below.
