With the 21st pick in the 2015 Acme Packing Company mock draft, Jason B. Hirschhorn assumed the role of the Cincinnati Bengals' general manager. In that capacity, he has selected:
D.J. Humphries, offensive lineman, Florida
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 307 pounds
40-yard dash: 5.15 seconds
Bench: 26 reps
Vertical jump: 31"
Broad jump: 104"
3-cone: 7.87 seconds
20-yard shuttle: 4.64 seconds
Here's Jason's explanation of the pick:
The Bengals made big investments in their backfield over the past two seasons, drafting running backs Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill. They also paid through the nose for quarterback Andy Dalton's extension.
With that many resources invested behind the line of scrimmage, it makes sense to insure that the offensive line holds up in the years to come. Left tackle Andre Whitworth is 33 and may not have many more seasons left in him. Andre Smith is only 28, but his conditioning, while improved from when he entered the NFL, suggests that he won't have the career longevity of his bookend line mate.
By bringing in D.J. Humphries, a prototypically sized tackle prospect out of Florida, the Bengals should have someone ready to step in for either Whitworth or Smith should they sustain an injury while potentially insuring themselves of stability at one of the tackle spots.
