As the days tick down towards the start of the 2017 NFL Draft, we have another report of the Green Bay Packers hosting a prospect with one of the team’s 30 official pre-draft visits.
Today’s report comes from ESPN’s Adam Caplan, and it involves running back Devante Mays from Utah State. The 5’10”, 230-pound back will reportedly be coming to Green Bay sometime next week for his visit.
A junior college transfer, Mays played two seasons for the Aggies and averaged over six yards per carry. His best season came as a junior, when he ran for 966 yards on 165 carries. He scored 9 touchdowns that year as well.
Athletically, Mays’ workout numbers suggest that he is a big, explosive back who struggles a bit to change direction. At his Pro Day (per NFL Draft Scout), he ran his 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds and had terrific jumps of 40.5” in the vertical and 10’9” in the broad. However, his cone and shuttle drills were well below average for a running back, with times of 7.43 seconds and 4.53 seconds, respectively.
