Packers 2017 Draft Picks: Devante Mays at #238 is Green Bay’s 3rd RB today

Green Bay has chosen yet another running back in round seven.

In the seventh round of the NFL Draft, teams are taking even more ridiculous shots in the dark than in other rounds of the event. The Green Bay Packers tend to really go for athletic projects in round seven, and this year’s first 7th round pick is no exception.

With pick number 238, the Packers have selected a third running back: Devante Mays from Utah State.

Mays visited the Packers prior to the draft, the third draft pick this year to have done so. He is a big, physical back, measuring in at 5 feet, 10-3/8 inches and 230 pounds. He appears to be a straight-ahead runner with excellent explosion and poor agility. That is reflected in his 4.52 40, 40.5” vertical, and 10’9” broad jump on the positive side, butt his 4.53 short shuttle and 7.43 3-cone time (all numbers from his Pro Day).

Mays had a two-year career at Utah State after starting out in junior college. As a senior, he only started two games and played in six after injuring his leg early in the season. As a junior, however, he played in all 13 games and started six, leading the Aggies in rushing with 966 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns.
