2019 NFL Combine Results, DBs: Get to know Isaiah Johnson and David Long

Meanwhile, a handful of safeties helped earn themselves some money on Monday as well.

NFL: Combine Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Each of the last two years, the Green Bay Packers have selected defensive backs with both of their first two draft picks. In 2017, cornerback Kevin King and safety Josh Jones were the picks in round two. Then last year, with Brian Gutekunst taking over, the team doubled down at corner with Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson.

While the cornerback position seems to be in a better position than it was at this time last year, the safety depth chart is pretty thin. This year’s crop of players at both positions are exciting, however, and many players at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine ran well on Monday.

At cornerback, a few players helped boost their stock significantly, including Houston’s Isaiah Johnson. He switched from receiver to corner before his junior year, but made an instant impact with two interceptions in each of the past two seasons. In Indy, Johnson impressed significantly. Not only is he big — 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds with 33-inch arms — but he also ran a great 40 time at 4.40 seconds. Johnson also posted a solid time in the 3-cone drill at 6.85 seconds and posted a terrific 11-foot-1 broad jump. Johnson may have worked his way into a top-100 pick with that workout.

Meanwhile, Michigan’s David Long left college with one year of eligibility remaining, but he posted elite agility numbers. He just hits the Packers’ traditional height minimum of 5-foot-10 5/8 (a cutoff the team bent a bit on for Alexander last year), but his 6.45-second cone time was the best of any player in Indy this year. He also had a great 39 1/2-inch vertical and a sub-4.00 second short shuttle time to go with a 4.45-second 40. Look for Long to come off the board sometime in the early part of day three.

Surprisingly, however, it was a safety who ran the fastest 40 at the entire combine this year. That honor goes to Zedrick Woods from Ole Miss, who led the way with a 4.29-second mark. Maryland’s Darnell Savage was next with a 4.36, but he had better explosiveness numbers with a 39 1/2-inch vertical. Finally, Iowa’s Amani Hooker probably made some money with a 4.48 40, 6.81-second 3-cone, and 4.10 short shuttle.

Here are the full results from all of the defensive back workouts on Monday.
