Over the next two weeks, we will take a look at each position group on the Packers and provide grades and insight on how they performed in the 2014 season. Today, we'll be looking at the quarterback position. Follow along with all of our positional breakdowns here.
It's a small probability, but it's definitely possible that the Green Bay Packers may have two new quarterbacks behind starter Aaron Rodgers at the start of training camp next season. The Packers re-signed veteran Matt Flynn to a one-year deal last season after the quarterback's market turned out to be a desert, while third-year pro Scott Tolzien just finished up the second year of his two-year contract. Both quarterbacks rarely saw any action for the Packers during the regular season with Rodgers playing all 16 games, but both helped improve the depth of the position far beyond where it was at the beginning of the 2013 season.
With a strong preseason performance last August from Tolzien, the Packers might be ready to move on from the 29-year-old Flynn and make the Wisconsin alumnus the backup to Rodgers. Here's a look at the value the Packers got from their one re-signed quarterback in 2014.
Matt Flynn
How Acquired: Free-agent signing, agreed to a one-year deal worth $1,068,125 last offseason.
Stats: Seven games played, 8/16 passing (50 percent), zero touchdowns, one interception, 34.9 passer rating.
Value: Flynn was signed on a cheap one-year to be a safety blanket in case third-stringer Scott Tolzien wasn't ready to make the next jump on the Packers roster. For a short-term deal, it provided extra security and gave Green Bay a solid backup, whom they thankfully did not need to put to much use in 2014.
