Packers start Elgton Jenkins at right tackle in week 1

Matt LaFleur alluded to it previously, but the Packers are shuffling the deck on the line instead of simply plugging in a replacement for Billy Turner.

With minutes before kickoff of their week one contest against the Minnesota Vikings, the Green Bay Packers’ warmup group revealed a mild surprise to those following the team. Right tackle Billy Turner had seemingly won that job in training camp, but a knee injury landed him on the inactive list.

The surprise comes as to the team’s decision for his replacement. Instead of Rick Wagner stepping in for Turner, the team is mixing it up, putting normal left guard Elgton Jenkins out on the edge at right tackle. Jenkins lined up there in warmups, then started the game at that position, matching up against Vikings defensive end Yannick Ngakoue.

Jenkins went through a position change as a rookie a year ago, moving from his familiar spot at center in college to left guard. However, Jenkins had experience at both tackle positions in college, and versatility is a quality that the Packers value highly in their linemen.

With Jenkins moving out to tackle, Lucas Patrick starts the game at left guard.
