Packers vs. Giants Inactives: Sam Shields and Don Barclay Both Out

The Packers' defense took a hit on Sunday afternoon, as cornerback Sam Shields was made inactive for the game against the Giants.

The Green Bay Packers' defense has been a rotating mess of players who are injured this season, but one constant has been that Sam Shields and Tramon Williams were healthy and starting at the cornerback positions. For the first time this year, one of those two players is inactive, as Shields has been shut down for the Giants game today.

On Friday, Shields was ruled as probable, since he missed Friday's practice with a hamstring issue. Mike McCarthy indicated that his missing practice was more precautionary than anything else, but apparently the problem is bad enough that Shields cannot play this afternoon. Without Casey Hayward as well, it's almost a lock that Davon House will get the start on the outside and that Micah Hyde will play in the slot when the defense goes into its nickel formation.

Also inactive is Nick Perry, who was doubtful with his foot injury, and Don Barclay, who hurt his knee last week and did not practice at all this week. Mike Neal will start opposite Clay Matthews at outside linebacker, while Marshall Newhouse will start at right tackle on offense.

The good news is that center Evan Dietrich-Smith is back, and that both Johnny Jolly and Ryan Pickett are active for the Packers' defensive line.

As for the Giants, defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is active and will suit up despite being ruled questionable this week. Corey Webster is out, however, and will be replaced in the starting lineup by sixth-year corner Trumaine McBride.
