Unfortunately, the Green Bay Packers' injury report grew in week two compared to week one of the 2013 season. Cornerback Casey Hayward has been ruled out for Sunday's game, and it certainly looks like he'll be held out through the bye week. We did hear good news about Morgan Burnett returning to practice (albeit on a limited basis), but three other starters made their first appearance on the injury report this season.
Player | Injury | Wednesday Practice Status |
Morgan Burnett | Hamstring | Limited |
Jermichael Finley | Toe | Did not practice |
Casey Hayward | Hamstring | Out |
Nick Perry | Neck | Full participation |
Josh Sitton | Back | Did not practice |
Awesome. McCarthy said that Sitton's back flared up on the flight from Green Bay to San Francisco - knowing that, it's hard to avoid wondering if it affected him during the game and caused him to play with poor technique and draw three penalties. However, the coach did say that Sitton had made progress since Tuesday. Hopefully a day or two off from practice will get him back on the field and effective.
The interesting factor about Sitton's injury was that McCarthy said Marshall Newhouse would slide into the starting lineup if Sitton were inactive. It is a logical leap that this means Newhouse would be playing right tackle while Don Barclay would move to fill in for Sitton at left guard; however, the coach did not expand on who would play where.
Finley's toe injury is a little more concerning, however. McCarthy said that he did not expect Finley to practice on Thursday and that he would be evaluated before Friday's practice. If Finley can't go on Sunday, that takes away a big weapon for Aaron Rodgers over the middle of the field and would force Andrew Quarless and Brandon Bostick into playing much bigger roles in the offense.
Perry's injury must be minimal, since he was a full participant in practice and his neck was not brought up during McCarthy's press conference.
