In a move to bolster their defensive line, the Green Bay Packers selected UCLA’s Datone Jones. Jones is a high-motor, versatile defensive lineman who brings a number of skills to Green Bay.

Defensive line was a problem spot for the Green Bay Packers in 2012. Despite spending multiple picks in that year's draft and several more seasons earlier, the Packers shuffled through linemen the entire year. Rookie Jerel Worthy played inconsistently before a torn ACL ended his season. Fellow end C.J. Wilson was effective against the run but struggled getting to the quarterback. Mike Neal was the Packers best pass rusher along the defensive line, but he was liability in run defense and missed several games due to suspension. Because of Green Bay's inability to field enough quality linemen, B.J. Raji was forced to play too many snaps for the third consecutive season.

Enter Datone Jones, the UCLA defensive lineman the Packers selected with the 26th pick in the 2013 draft. Unlike most defensive prospects, Jones played in a 3-4 scheme his senior year at UCLA. Despite being new to the position, Jones provided instant impact. His 19 tackles for loss were 12th in all of college football, and his 5.5 sacks were a tremendous amount for a 3-4 defensive lineman. While Jones played mostly at end, he slid inside for certain sub packages. Dom Capers believes Jones will continue to move around at the next level.

He has the ability to play either outside at defensive end and obviously we play an awful lot of sub packages today in defending the offenses that we have to defend. So, he can move inside and play inside. He's an athletic player, has some basketball background. I think he's a high-character guy with a very good work ethic. Again, as we watched him play, it was easy to project him playing in our defense because they play a very similar defense at UCLA.

Reading Capers' praise, it sounds like Jones projects to play a significant role in the Packers defense. But will he be a starter in the base defense week 1 in San Francisco? With Pickett manning the nose and B.J. Raji taking an end spot, there's only one opening available for Jones. His main competition will come from Wilson and Neal. Both started games for the Packers last year, but neither is particularly well rounded. Neal was the better of the two in 2012, but his history of injury suggests he could drop out of this race at any time.

The main hurdles Jones will have to clear are his size and consistency. At 280 pounds, Jones is light for a 3-4 lineman and may get pushed around by an NFL offensive line. Consequently, Jones' play will be inconsistent until he can put on more size. Capers said Jones has a wide frame and will be able to add weight, but that takes time. It's unreasonable to expect him to put on the needed 15-20 pounds between now and the start of training camp.

All of this is why Jones probably won't be more than a situational player when the season rolls around. More than anything else, the coaches prefer consistency from their defensive starters. A.J. Hawk hasn't been many fans' favorite player, but year after year he holds onto his starting job because he understands the defense and puts himself in the right places. With a few years to develop his body, Jones should grow into a consistent player. Until then, he'll contribute in a situational role.

Following the selection of Datone Jones by the Packers, we asked a UCLA blogger what we can expect.

After the Packers selected Datone Jones last night, I hit up my friend Ryan Rosenblatt from UCLA blog Bruins Nation and the SB Nation NFL newsdesk and asked him if he could give us the lowdown on the defensive lineman. He more than obliged. His words are below.

Datone Jones came into UCLA with a fair amount of hype, got playing time as a freshman and then really flashed elite pass rushing skills as a sophomore, which raised expectations tenfold heading into his junior year. Unfortunately, Jones broke his foot before the season and had to redshirt, which didn't just wipe out an entire year for him, but it kept him from playing at his best when he came back as a redshirt junior. That quick first step, which made him so good as a sophomore when he played a true 4-3 rush end, was gone his junior year and UCLA even experimented with him at tackle.

Little did Jones know at the time, but that junior season ended up being a big bonus for his development. Because he couldn't rely on just out-running guys around the edge, Jones had to learn how to hold the edge and work inside. That showed his senior year when Jim Mora's defense played to his versatility, using him all over the line to great effect. He was a force inside against the run, held the edge when asked to play outside and with his foot 100 percent healthy, he found himself in the backfield with regularity.

Jones' biggest asset is that he can really play all over the defensive front. Inside, outside, in different schemes, Jones can make an impact all over. Odds are, he'll fit in best against the run on the outside in early downs then slide inside and be a rush tackle on third down, but his ability to play all over should make him easy to fit in and use from day one.

The big concern with Jones is how he struggles when engaged sometimes. He does well to keep opposing linemen's hands off him, but when they get him, he often has trouble getting free. Some have speculated it's just a technique issue, other think he needs to get a little stronger, but whatever the answer is, he's going to have to do a better job getting disengaged.

Questions from APC

1. Does Jones have the size to play 3-4 defensive end?

Definitely. That's where he spent a lot of time as a senior last year and at 6'4'', 283 lbs. with the frame to put on a little more weight if need be, playing 3-4 end shouldn't be a problem. In fact, it's probably the best place for him.

2. Jones will have a chance to start, but who certainly won't be penciled in as a starter to begin training camp. Do you think he can win a job and be an every down starter?

Can he? Sure, but I don't think he will from day one. He'll definitely be in the rotation in Week 1, but my guess is that he'll probably be used primarily as an interior rusher at the beginning and work into a bigger role as the season goes on. While I wouldn't bet on him starting in Week 1, i'd bet on him starting in Week 17.

3. You said that some think he has poor technique when engaged, while others think he needs to get stronger. What do you think?

Both? Jones' technique can let him down at times and he'll give up trying to positively work through being engaged, disengage and try to run around the linemen. That said, if he got a little stronger, he probably would be able to at least get a push and get free once he got the opposing lineman back pedaling. I don't think it's as much an either/or question as him having room to improve at both.

4. Going from Westwood to Green Bay probably sucks. Think he's going to handle that well?

Datone should handle it okay. Obviously, most guys would probably rather be in Westwood than Green Bay, but Datone is from Compton and even if it's sunny in Compton, Green Bay is a fine place to be by comparison. Datone was one of the most mature, level headed players in the UCLA program, too, and wasn't known as the guy out in Hollywood or partying in Santa Monica every weekend, so he should be fine.

5. What is your favorite kind of candy?

Yes.

Thanks to Ryan for his time, and I hope you've learned something you didn't know about the Packers' first round pick.

Datone Jones has been discussed as high as No. 19 to the Giants, so the Packers are getting good value with Datone Jones. They're also getting a tremendous upgrade on the defensive line.

Ted Thompson always seems to pick good football players. Datone Jones owned the Senior Bowl week. He is a perfect pick for the Packers. He will be a 3-4 end.

Ted Thompson and Dom Capers have great things to say about Datone Jones, who did a perfect job of sounding extremely confident without being arrogant when talking about joining the Green Bay Packers.

The Green Bay Packers' defensive front got better last night when they picked up Datone Jones with the 26th pick in the draft. Jones is an extremely athletic lineman who excelled as both a 4-3 end and pass-rushing tackle at UCLA who projects to 3-4 defensive end in the Packers' scheme. He didn't waste any time last night before he invoked the name of one of the greatest Packers of all time.

The Packers' Twitter account also sent out some thoughts from defensive coordinator Dom Capers, who was happy to add a player with Jones' speed, size and versatility.

When asked about the Packers, he showed specific knowledge of the team when he said that "[t]hey run a multiple defense but for the most part they run the 3-4 defense, and I feel like when they go to third-down mode with their nickel package, I can rush from the interior. Me as the 'three-tech,' big (B.J.) Raji as a nose, play next to Nick Perry and go to work."

We'll have our grades for the pick out shortly, but I'll give you a little spoiler: I'm a big fan. I was behind picking Jones all week, and I'm thrilled we got him.

THE PICK IS IN!

With the 26th overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers have selected...

DE Datone Jones, UCLA

We covered film study on him earlier this week - check out an excerpt below and the full analysis here.

All the talent is there to be a great end in a 3-4, but Jones will need good coaching in order to become more consistent and learn how to react better to the more consistent double teaming he’d see in the 3-4. For right now, Jones should probably work in a rotation and not have immediate starting expectations put on him, but I believe he can become a great 3-4 end in very short order.

We'll have complete analysis of the pick as tonight goes on. A complete list of the Packers' remaining selections is below.
